A really beautiful gym! The training was excellent, the coach is very competent and friendly, and the people were also very nice – you feel welcome right away. Highly recommended!

Did a private session with Steve while staying in Moraira. Pleasant guy to be trained by. What stood out to me was the style of teaching, which came across as a way that had a lot of time and energy devoted to knowing what works for people in the sense of learning new skills. Steve has humor, a sick kimura system and a beautiful place to train at. If you’re considering visiting his gym while on vacation like us, based on my experience, you won’t regret it!

Visited matrix last night as we were staying half an hour away. Really enjoyed how professor Steve breaks the submissions. Being black belt myself I actually learnt better way of s mount. Steve broke the mechanic of it which made me transit better due to my knee injury. Great bunch of people and cool vibes . Definitely very welcoming 🙏🏾

Our son is super happy at the Matrix. They make a good combination between techniques and having fun. Definitely recommend this gym iff you have small children.

One of the best Martial Arts schools at the Costa Blanca! The teachers are strict but friendly, they really know how to work with kids. My children just love it! It’s a mix of teachings and fun with a very personal approach.

Went to train at Matrix Martial Arts as I was on holiday. Professor Newman met me and taught an amazing lesson. The academy is modern, a high standard of cleanliness and has very good air conditioning. I felt welcomed by the students and the teaching staff. The lesson Prof Newman taught was very thorough with his curriculum and he was happy to answer questions. If I could rate Matrix Martial Arts with more stars I would. This place isn’t one to miss.

On holiday in Spain. Looked for a gym and found Matrix, gym is clean and has airco. We were welcome to train. The professor Steve is a great coach with loads of knowledge. Even tho we went there during our holiday he paid great attention to us. Rolls were respectful and the level was good. Would recommend it to everyone! 👍🏼

Me and my brother in law are in vacation here in spain and wanted to get some training in the vacation. I got in contact with Steve and we were welcome to come and train. We went to the open mat and it was free. The coach is great and very knowledgeable and was very happy to help and give tips/advice. Especially with the kimura Steve is filled with knowledge. The gym has AC and is very clean. It gets mopped after every class so the hygene is very good. Furthermore the whole atmosphere was very good. Everbody was chill and wanted to roll. I had a great experience and I’m definitely coming back. 10/10 would recommend everybody to check this gym out.

I had been thinking about taking up Jiu Jitsu for a number of years but never really found somewhere where I wanted to take the plunge. Having looked at all the clubs in the area I decided to have a trial lesson with Professor Steve Newman at Matrix Martial Arts. I’m so glad I did. I joined Matrix the following week. I’ve now been training with Professor Steve and his fantastic coaches Cannon and Dennis at Matrix for 10 months. My confidence is through the roof and I’m in the best shape of my life (despite now being 51 years old). I have made some great friends and really feel a part of the Matrix family. If you want to try Martial Arts, there’s nowhere better. And you’re never too old. 😉

I had an amazing time training at Professor Steve's gym, Matrix Martial Arts! The facilities are fantastic, with plenty of space, and the team is incredibly welcoming. I reached out to Steve because we have a mutual friend from Lovato's in the US, and I can say for sure that he was both knowledgeable and incredibly welcoming. A relay good school to learn and practice Brazilian jujitsu and MMA. I have been a member for over a year now and I really appreciate the opportunity to study under Professor Steve (a second degree black belt under Professor Rafael Lavato Jr) and the assisting coaches. The curriculum is well thought through and you don’t need any experience to get started. The school has AC and it is very appreciated in the hot summer months of Spain. If you are interested in martial arts I recommend this school. Classes are taught in both English and Spanish since the professor is speaking English and the assistant coach is bilingual and translating into Spanish when needed.

My name is Nathan, I'm a brown belt in BJJ and I've had the pleasure of getting a private lesson with Steve Newman who owns and operates Matrix Martial Arts while he was traveling to Nova Scotia Canada. What proceeded was the best private lesson I have ever been a part of. He proceeded to teach me what will become a huge evolution of my knee shield and half guard strategy. Steve knows his stuff! He had an answer for all my questions, and would explain "how" and "why" he does the sequences he does, which was great because it gave me the context of where the techniques would fit in my game. He also gave some finer details on basic stuff I've been doing since I started in 2006. On top of all that he was awesome to hang out with! Absolute pleasure to be in Steve's presence. I highly recommend if you have the opportunity to train with Steve to do so! He will sharpen your sword. Cheers!

We first met Professor Newman last year when he came to our school to teach a seminar by recommendation from one of our members. To say he knocked it out of the park is an understatement. The seminar went so well we couldn't help but have him back again this year for a full weekend. And again, home run. It's not just the attention to detail in his techniques, but the masterful yet digestible way he presents to a group is what I believe really sets him apart from other instructors. Whether you are new to jiu jitsu or a seasoned competitor, Professor Newman has something special to add to your game. We are so happy to have made this connection and can't wait to have him back again soon!

I had a fantastic experience in Matrix Martial Arts. Great teachings of Professor Steve, which also takes time for instructing you on the tiny details of the techniques he's teaching you. Also a very nice and clean gym, and a great environment for learning BJJ.

I’ve trained at martial arts gyms and academies around the world and this is by far one of the best I’ve experienced. I was on holiday nearby for 3 weeks, so spend some time with Steve and the team. Amazing vibe at the classes and some world-class coaching from Steve. Whether you’re a pro-fighter, or want to start out a fitness or martial arts journey, this is the place for you.

As a former student (from his time in Canada) I have had the pleasure to learn from Steve for many years. I’ve always enjoyed his teaching style and try to emulate many aspects of it for my students. Steve has an uncanny ability to break down even the most complex moves in a manner that can be received (and retained) by all belt levels. His recent Kimura seminar at our school was met with overwhelming positive feedback. The students not only learned several new attacks but were also able to remove many of the roadblocks they had previously ran into, all while having a great time. The best dojo I've been to in a long time. Very clean, good equipment and super nice people. I am doing the JiuJitsu basic course. Highly recommended. The course is very detailed, questions are always well answered and there are many partner exercises that prepare you well for training with students who already know more about JiuJitsu. The dojo is very easy to reach by car from Javea, Ondara or Dénia, via the N332, and you can always find a parking space quickly. Give it a try!

We are following the muay thai lessons of john. We are enjoying it. John provides good explanation of the exercises with enough examples. Easy to follow for every level and techniques worthy of experts. I feel tired/ satisfied in a good way after each lesson. Pushed in a good way to my limits. Very happy to continue 👊 Keep it up guys.

Brilliant place to learn BJJ, I have trained all over the world and it’s certainly my favourite place to train by a mile. Facilities and amazing and coaches really knowledgable. I have also trained Judo at the school and that was amazing too. The open Mat is a real experience that every practitioner needs to undertake.

Matrix is an amazing school to start Brazilian Jiu-jitsu! I've been going for quite a few months now and I'm so impressed with the quality of the martial arts teaching and also the sense of community in the classes. Steve has a great teaching style and is so accommodating, always doing his best to make you feel confident in what you're doing. There is also a nice mix of ages and also English and Spanish to cater to everyone 😊 The gym itself is really well equipped, really clean and plenty of space so overall 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I absolutely recommend Matrix! I started jiujitsu here in January 2022 with bad anxiety (not coping with stress, petty tantrums with my boyfriend, constant headaches) and my doctor actually told me to stop the sport - he could not have been more wrong. Jiujitsu at Matrix has helped my anxiety more than anything else I tried - everyone is so supportive and encouraging, regardless of level or fitness, I am so happy I joined!

As a newcomer to the world of Martial Arts I had reservations when joining the Matrix gym in Pedreguer, but these fears were alleviated when I started training with Steve and his team! I couldn’t be more impressed with the facilities, atmosphere and level of competency at the gym. As soon as I started training here I felt welcomed and part of the team, this gym is great for newbies like me but also for experienced fighters from what I’ve seen. Well done guys for creating such a great place to train, learn and compete.

I've been training at matrix for several months as a complete novice in my 30s. Easily the best atmosphere I've ever experienced with 10+ years working in the fitness industry. No egos, just a diverse group of ages, sizes and nationally helping each other become better and grow each day under the leadership of an amazingly knowledgeable coach in Steve. I was nervous to start a new sport, far out of my comfort zone. After an hour I knew it was for me. Steve said bjj would change my life, it already has. I've lost weight, become fitter, more confident and in touch with the movements of my body. I'm proud to be part of the group.

Una gran experiencia, no tenia experiencia con artes marciales y me ha abierto los ojos a ese mundo, no solo que he aprendido varias tecnicas utiles, ademas me es de gran ayuda para relajarme y centrarme en lo que estoy haciendo vengo con preocupaciones de mi dia a dia y los dejo en la puerta y al terminar estan olvidadas. El profesor es muy atento a los estudiantes para que aprendan todo correctamente, esta aprendiendo español pero al igual que yo cada dia aprendo un poco mas el aprende un poco mas de español y se ve que se empeña, y sobre rodo esta muy atento a mantener todo limpio y desinfectado, le mide la temperatura a todos los estudiantes antes de entrar una gran experiencia, buen cardio y sobre todo un muy buen compañerismo entre los compañeros y el profesor 10/10

Our daughter tried out kick boxing at Matrix when she was just 13, very shy and lacking in confidence. Fast forward 3 years and she has learned so much about herself! It’s was clear when I first met Steve that he had a passion for not only teaching but upholding the standard of a true black belt by challenging himself to find the best tutalige possible through Rafael Lovato Jr. I would suggest him as an instructor. I trained at Matrix Martial Arts during my short stay in Javea. Steve was very helpful and welcoming and he even leant me a Gi and belt so I could train. The gym is a great space it’s clean, well kept and the team were very friendly. Having the opportunity to roll with someone of Steve’s calibre was a great experience. Really enjoyed our intro class with Steve during our work stay in the area. Steve is a great trainer who really knows how to demonstrate and explain the movements in a clear way.
